Christchurch and District Band

About us

In the beginning

The Christchurch and District Band were established in February 2013, thanks to the vision of Steff Emmett. With the generous support of Ye Olde George Inn which provided the function room in their courtyard at no cost, over 40 enthusiastic musicians gathered for the band's inaugural rehearsal, inspired by an editorial in the Daily Echo. Steff remains deeply appreciative of Ye Olde George Inn's hospitality and generosity, which helped the Christchurch and District Band embark on their musical journey.

Quickly outgrowing the temporary accommodation at the George, the band were offered their first "proper" home at the Priory School in Christchurch. The use of the school hall was arranged by the late Judy Jamieson MBE, who was Chair on the School Board of Governors.

As the band outgrew the resources of the school, Judy was instrumental in securing their second home at Burton Community Centre. The band remained there until the Pandemic hit and were forced to close, along with most other organisations in the country.

Again, the generosity of
the townsfolk helped the band progress. Judy became a friend of the band and later joining the percussion section. We will always remember her for everything she did for the band, the community and will forever be grateful for her unwavering friendship.

After the Pandemic - the future

Once the government gave the go ahead to re-open community buildings, the band found a new home at the Somerford Arc Community Centre, and we are pleased that this wonderful community organisation - The Town Band of Christchurch, thrives at the Somerford Arc Community Centre.
With rehearsals every Tuesday from 7.30 to 9.30pm.

Currently we have over 40 members on our books and we welcome additional players. If you play a brass or woodwind instrument and fancy coming along one Tuesday for a try out to see if we are for you, please contact us on 07974 320122 or drop us an email.

The Christchurch and District Band Logo.

What does it mean?

Christchurch new logo copy_edited_edited

As the Christchurch and District Band is the Town Band of Christchurch, our coat of arms is loosely based around the coat of arms of the Borough of Christchurch.

  • Ermine on black with a cross to quarter the shield incorporating two musical lyres.

  • Emerging from the Mural Crown is a representation of the upper storey of the Tower of Christchurch Priory.

  • On either side are Lions crowned with a Saxon Crown. The Lions are depicted embracing the shield.

  • Motto: 'Music Triumphs Over Adversity'

The band is entwined with the town of Christchurch. The towns close association with the Priory Church is represented by the North face of the West Tower of the Priory Church, which is placed in a mural crown, this denotes the status of Municipal Borough, with the Chi-Rho monogram which means Christ, Greek letters used since Roman times.
The supporters are the lions of England. They wear Saxon crowns to refer to the Saxon origins of the Borough and embrace the shield to signify their guardianship over the band and the significance of music.

'Music Triumphs Over Adversity' is the band motto and is the core belief of founder Steff Emmett.
Despite years of painful procedures and ill health she still advocates this motto as it has been her constant. She says "Without music, we are nothing. Life would be unbearably silent and empty. In moments of loneliness or sadness, music can be solice and bring happiness. In moments of happiness, it adds joy and excitement - Music is in our soul and should not be underestimated. It brings people together, creates friendships, memories and aids in the recollection of memories. From an educational standpoint it is invaluable and can provide lifelong skills. Music IS the fabric of life.

Why are they important?

Stand Banners

The band is dedicated to delivering not just an entertaining musical experience, but also a polished and professional image.

Every detail counts, from our personal appearance to the visual elements surrounding us, like posters and social media presence.

Stand banners play a crucial role in this, serving as powerful tools that enhance our stage presence and visibility.

As our band continues to grow, we find ourselves in need of more banners to fill bare stands during performances. Unfortunately, they are costly.

Each banner is professionally embroidered and built to last. Our first batch of banners were paid for by a generous "friend of the band" and look as good today. Your help can make a significant difference, whether you support us by attending one of our concerts, or making a donation, we are very grateful.

Donations

Please support the Town Band of Christchurch. Every penny you donate goes directly into the fund, helping us thrive and remain a cherished part of the community.

Your donation ensures that we can continue to bring music and joy.

Join with us in keeping the spirit of live music alive!

Thank you for your support.
